Inside the Unfair Judge: A Mechanistic Interpretability Account of LLM-as-Judge Bias

Existing studies of LLM-as-judge scoring bias work predominantly at the input-output level: they perturb inputs, measure score deltas, and propose prompt-level mitigations. We argue that the same biases admit a representation-level account in the judge's hidden state, complementary to the input-output view and operationally useful in ways it does not afford. We report three findings, across seven judges, seven bias types, and nine benchmarks. Geometry: baseline judging inputs occupy a tight activation manifold while biased inputs are displaced along a low-dimensional, type-specific subspace that sharpens with depth and is recovered consistently by three families of estimators. Causal control: steering hidden states along this subspace drives scoring in both directions, forward shifts reproducing biased scoring on clean inputs and reverse shifts restoring baseline scoring on biased ones, while matched-norm random directions produce shifts an order of magnitude smaller. Operational: a simple linear projection onto the same bias-direction features anticipates judge failures on three entirely unseen benchmarks, substantially outperforming text-based alternatives. Reading bias as activation geometry, rather than as input-output noise, unifies geometric structure, causal control, and operational prediction within a single framework. OmniFood-Bench: Evaluating VLMs for Nutrient Reasoning and Personalized Health Advice

The rapid integration of Large Vision-Language Models (VLMs) into critical infrastructure promises to revolutionize personalized healthcare and dietary management. However, in the domain of food systems, autonomous agents face a unique and persistent challenge: the "Systemic Information Asymmetry" between visual appearance and intrinsic nutritional composition. Existing benchmarks primarily focus on coarse-grained classification tasks, such as food category recognition, which fail to evaluate the intricate reasoning chain required for real-world dietary management -- specifically, the ability to traverse from identifying hidden ingredients to estimating physical mass, and finally synthesizing safety-critical medical advice. In this paper, we introduce OmniFood-Bench, a comprehensive benchmark constructed from the MM-Food-100K dataset. Unlike previous works, OmniFood-Bench evaluates VLMs across three progressive capabilities: Basic Perception (Ingredients & Cooking Methods), Quantitative Reasoning (Portion Size & Nutritional Profiling), and Safety-Critical Advisory (Disease-Specific Recommendations). We evaluate six state-of-the-art VLMs, including gpt-5.1, gemini-3-flash, and qwen3-vl-8B. Our extensive experiments reveal a startling "Semantic-Physical Gap": while models achieve near-human accuracy in naming dishes, they exhibit catastrophic failure in mass estimation and frequently hallucinate benign advice for high-risk diabetic profiles. This work establishes a rigorous standard for trustworthiness in autonomous agents deployed for public health. Text-Driven 3D Indoor Scene Synthesis in Non-Manhattan Environments

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in 3D indoor synthesis for Manhattan environments. However, existing methods often fail to capture plausible object layout patterns in non-Manhattan settings, primarily because they struggle to model non-orthogonal spatial relationships, leading to high geometric violations and low physical fidelity. To address this challenge, we propose SPG-Layout, a novel text-driven framework designed to generate physically plausible indoor scenes within complex non-Manhattan environments. Specifically, we first utilize statistical priors of object distributions to guide the training process, enhancing environmental understanding and fidelity. Furthermore, mirroring human design workflows, we adopt a hierarchical layout strategy that prioritizes the placement of large objects, thereby substantially minimizing layout violations. By synergizing these components, SPG-Layout achieves a balanced optimization of semantic realism and physical plausibility. To evaluate performance in these complex settings, we constructed a new benchmark comprising 500 diverse non-Manhattan environments. Extensive experiments demonstrate that SPG-Layout consistently and significantly outperforms existing methods across both Manhattan and non-Manhattan environments. The code will be publicly released.

Temporal Contrastive Decoding: A Training-Free Method for Large Audio-Language Models

Large audio-language models (LALMs) generalize across speech, sound, and music, but unified decoders can exhibit a \emph{temporal smoothing bias}: transient acoustic cues may be underutilized in favor of temporally smooth context that is better supported by language priors, leading to less specific audio-grounded outputs. We propose \emph{Temporal Contrastive Decoding} (TCD), a training-free decoding method for unified LALMs that mitigates this effect at inference time. TCD constructs a temporally blurred slow-path view by smoothing the input waveform and re-encoding it, then contrasts next-token logits from the original and slow-path views. The contrastive signal is applied as a token-level logit update restricted to a small candidate set. A self-normalized stability score sets the blur window and update scale, and a step-wise gate based on uncertainty and audio reliance activates the update only when needed. Experiments on MMAU and AIR-Bench show consistent improvements on strong unified LALMs. We further conduct ablations and an architectural applicability study to analyze the contributions of key components and how TCD behaves across large audio-language model designs.
