Revisiting Lossy Verification in Speculative Decoding: Mechanisms, Trade-offs, and Failure Modes

Speculative Decoding (SD) accelerates large language model inference by allowing a lightweight draft model to propose tokens that are subsequently verified in parallel by a larger target model. Recent approaches introduce lossy verification schemes to further improve efficiency by relaxing strict distributional matching. Yet such relaxation silently rewrites the decoding distribution, and the resulting acceleration can come at the cost of unstable, sometimes severely degraded generation quality. In this work, we present a principled analysis of the distributions induced by lossy verification methods. We show that many seemingly distinct approaches differ only superficially and can be classified into two categories: truncation-based verification and collaborative verification. We further construct a diagnostic evaluation framework across curated benchmarks. For truncation-based methods, we identify a fundamental pitfall: performance can degrade significantly compared to the true truncation sampling baseline due to distributional distortion. For collaborative verification, we uncover a key principles: controlling the overshoot of draft probabilities relative to target probabilities is essential to prevent low-quality outputs. CoT2-Meta: Budgeted Metacognitive Control for Test-Time Reasoning

Recent test-time reasoning methods improve performance by generating more candidate chains or searching over larger reasoning trees, but they typically lack explicit control over when to expand, what to prune, how to repair, and when to abstain. We introduce CoT2-Meta, a training-free metacognitive reasoning framework that combines object-level chain-of-thought generation with meta-level control over partial reasoning trajectories. The framework integrates four components: strategy-conditioned thought generation, tree-structured search, an online process oracle for step-level reasoning evaluation, and a meta-controller that allocates computation through expansion, pruning, repair, stopping, and fallback decisions. Under matched inference budgets, CoT2-Meta consistently outperforms strong single-path, sampling-based, and search-based baselines, including ReST-MCTS. On the default backbone, it achieves 92.8 EM on MATH, 90.4 accuracy on GPQA, 98.65 EM on GSM8K, 75.8 accuracy on BBEH, 85.6 accuracy on MMMU-Pro, and 48.8 accuracy on HLE, with gains over the strongest non-CoT2-Meta baseline of +3.6, +5.2, +1.15, +2.0, +4.3, and +4.3 points, respectively. Beyond these core results, the framework remains effective across a broader 15-benchmark suite spanning knowledge and QA, multi-hop reasoning, coding, and out-of-distribution evaluation. Additional analyses show better compute scaling, improved calibration, stronger selective prediction, targeted repair behavior, and consistent gains across backbone families. These results suggest that explicit metacognitive control is a practical design principle for reliable and compute-efficient test-time reasoning systems.

Steve-Evolving: Open-World Embodied Self-Evolution via Fine-Grained Diagnosis and Dual-Track Knowledge Distillation

Open-world embodied agents must solve long-horizon tasks where the main bottleneck is not single-step planning quality but how interaction experience is organized and evolved. To this end, we present Steve-Evolving, a non-parametric self-evolving framework that tightly couples fine-grained execution diagnosis with dual-track knowledge distillation in a closed loop. The method follows three phases: Experience Anchoring, Experience Distillation, and Knowledge-Driven Closed-Loop Control. In detail, Experience Anchoring solidifies each subgoal attempt into a structured experience tuple with a fixed schema (pre-state, action, diagnosis-result, and post-state) and organizes it in a three-tier experience space with multi-dimensional indices (e.g., condition signatures, spatial hashing, and semantic tags) plus rolling summarization for efficient and auditable recall. To ensure sufficient information density for attribution, the execution layer provides compositional diagnosis signals beyond binary outcomes, including state-difference summaries, enumerated failure causes, continuous indicators, and stagnation/loop detection. Moreover, successful trajectories of Experience Distillation are generalized into reusable skills with explicit preconditions and verification criteria, while failures are distilled into executable guardrails that capture root causes and forbid risky operations at both subgoal and task granularities. Besides, Knowledge-Driven Closed-Loop Control retrieved skills and guardrails are injected into an LLM planner, and diagnosis-triggered local replanning updates the active constraints online, forming a continual evolution process without any model parameter updates. Experiments on the long-horizon suite of Minecraft MCU demonstrate consistent improvements over static-retrieval baselines.

WebWorld: A Large-Scale World Model for Web Agent Training

Web agents require massive trajectories to generalize, yet real-world training is constrained by network latency, rate limits, and safety risks. We introduce \textbf{WebWorld} series, the first open-web simulator trained at scale. While existing simulators are restricted to closed environments with thousands of trajectories, WebWorld leverages a scalable data pipeline to train on 1M+ open-web interactions, supporting reasoning, multi-format data, and long-horizon simulations of 30+ steps. For intrinsic evaluation, we introduce WebWorld-Bench with dual metrics spanning nine dimensions, where WebWorld achieves simulation performance comparable to Gemini-3-Pro. For extrinsic evaluation, Qwen3-14B trained on WebWorld-synthesized trajectories improves by +9.2\% on WebArena, reaching performance comparable to GPT-4o. WebWorld enables effective inference-time search, outperforming GPT-5 as a world model. Beyond web simulation, WebWorld exhibits cross-domain generalization to code, GUI, and game environments, providing a replicable recipe for world model construction.

PolarMem: A Training-Free Polarized Latent Graph Memory for Verifiable Multimodal Agents

As multimodal agents evolve from passive observers to long-horizon decision-makers, they require memory systems that provide not just information availability but logical verifiability. A fundamental limitation of current architectures is the epistemic asymmetry inherent in probabilistic vision-language models and dense associative memories: they conflate semantic affinity with factual existence and structurally fail to encode negative constraints. To this end, we introduce PolarMem, a training-free Polarized Latent Graph Memory designed to ground agent reasoning in verifiable evidence. PolarMem transforms fuzzy perceptual likelihoods into discrete logical constraints through non-parametric distributional partitioning. Furthermore, it employs a polarized graph topology with orthogonal inhibitory connections to explicitly store verified negation as a primary cognitive state. At inference time, we enforce a logic-dominant retrieval paradigm, suppressing hallucinatory patterns that violate negative constraints. Extensive evaluation across eight frozen Vision--Language Models and six benchmarks demonstrates that PolarMem functions as a robust cognitive system, establishing a foundation for verifiable multimodal agents. Our code is available at https://github.com/czs-ict/PolarMem.
