ResRank: Unifying Retrieval and Listwise Reranking via End-to-End Joint Training with Residual Passage Compression

Large language model (LLM) based listwise reranking has emerged as the dominant paradigm for achieving state-of-the-art ranking effectiveness in information retrieval. However, its reliance on feeding full passage texts into the LLM introduces two critical bottlenecks: the "lost in the middle" phenomenon degrades ranking quality as input length grows, and the inference latency scales super-linearly with sequence length, rendering it impractical for industrial deployment. In this paper, we present ResRank, a unified retrieval-reranking framework that fundamentally addresses both challenges. Inspired by multimodal LLMs that project visual inputs into compact token representations, ResRank employs an Encoder-LLM to compress each candidate passage into a single embedding, which is then fed alongside the query text into a Reranker-LLM for listwise ranking. To alleviate the misalignment between the compressed representation space and the ranking space, we introduce a residual connection structure that combines encoder embeddings with contextualized hidden states from the reranker. Furthermore, we replace the conventional autoregressive decoding with a one-step cosine-similarity-based scoring mechanism, eliminating the generation bottleneck entirely. ResRank is trained through a carefully designed dual-stage, multi-task, end-to-end joint optimization strategy that simultaneously trains the encoder and reranker, achieving learning objective alignment between retrieval and reranking while substantially reducing training complexity. Extensive experiments on TREC Deep Learning and eight BEIR benchmark datasets demonstrate that ResRank achieves competitive or superior ranking effectiveness compared to existing approaches while requiring zero generated tokens and processing only one token per passage, yielding a fundamentally better balance between effectiveness and efficiency.

Quark Medical Alignment: A Holistic Multi-Dimensional Alignment and Collaborative Optimization Paradigm

While reinforcement learning for large language model alignment has progressed rapidly in recent years, transferring these paradigms to high-stakes medical question answering reveals a fundamental paradigm mismatch. Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback relies on preference annotations that are prohibitively expensive and often fail to reflect the absolute correctness of medical facts. Reinforcement Learning from Verifiable Rewards lacks effective automatic verifiers and struggles to handle complex clinical contexts. Meanwhile, medical alignment requires the simultaneous optimization of correctness, safety, and compliance, yet multi-objective heterogeneous reward signals are prone to scale mismatch and optimization conflicts.To address these challenges, we propose a robust medical alignment paradigm. We first construct a holistic multi-dimensional medical alignment matrix that decomposes alignment objectives into four categories: fundamental capabilities, expert knowledge, online feedback, and format specifications. Within each category, we establish a closed loop of where observable metrics inform attributable diagnosis, which in turn drives optimizable rewards, thereby providing fine-grained, high-resolution supervision signals for subsequent iterative optimization. To resolve gradient domination and optimization instability problem caused by heterogeneous signals, we further propose a unified optimization mechanism. This mechanism employs Reference-Frozen Normalization to align reward scales and implements a Tri-Factor Adaptive Dynamic Weighting strategy to achieve collaborative optimization that is weakness-oriented, risk-prioritized, and redundancy-reducing. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed paradigm in real-world medical scenario evaluations, establishing a new paradigm for complex alignment in vertical domains.

From Atoms to Chains: Divergence-Guided Reasoning Curriculum for Unlabeled LLM Domain Adaptation

Adapting Large Language Models (LLMs) to specialized domains without human-annotated data is a crucial yet formidable challenge. Widely adopted knowledge distillation methods often devolve into coarse-grained mimicry, where the student model inefficiently targets its own weaknesses and risks inheriting the teacher's reasoning flaws. This exposes a critical pedagogical dilemma: how to devise a reliable curriculum when the teacher itself is not an infallible expert. Our work resolves this by capitalizing on a key insight: while LLMs may exhibit fallibility in complex, holistic reasoning, they often exhibit high fidelity on focused, atomic sub-problems. Based on this, we propose Divergence-Guided Reasoning Curriculum (DGRC), which constructs a learning path from atomic knowledge to reasoning chains by dynamically deriving two complementary curricula from disagreements in reasoning pathways. When a student and teacher produce conflicting results, DGRC directs the teacher to perform a diagnostic analysis: it analyzes both reasoning paths to formulate atomic queries that target the specific points of divergence, and then self-answers these queries to create high-confidence atomic question-answer pairs. These pairs then serve a dual purpose: (1) providing an atomic curriculum to rectify the student's knowledge gaps, and (2) serving as factual criteria to filter the teacher's original reasoning chains, yielding a verified CoT curriculum that teaches the student how to integrate atomic knowledge into complete reasoning paths. Experiments across the medical and legal domains on student models of various sizes demonstrate the effectiveness of our DGRC framework. Notably, our method achieves a 7.76% relative improvement for the 1.5B student model in the medical domain over strong unlabeled baseline.
